Starfish love pops up everywhere...

I love how our Starfish Tunic pops up all over the place. Now as you all know, an island is not necessarily a tropical island.  Have you ever been to "Fire Island" in NY..... a tiny sliver of an island only 31 miles long and in some parts only 520 feet wide.  It was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and actually split in half, so that 31 miles long is actually 2 islands now.   Well in true "island" fashion the people of Fire Island picked themselves up after Hurricane Sandy, cleaned up and even opened back up for business in the summer following that devastating storm.  The lovely little coastal boutique on the island is called "A Summer...

Volcano on Montserrat

The first time I heard about the volcano in Montserrat was during our first hurricane season we spent in Tobago, waiting until it was safe (from hurricanes) to go north.  Every morning we listened to the "Caribbean Safety & Security Net" on the SSB radio, where we got our up-to-date weather reports.  Yachts all over the Caribbean would report in about thefts or crimes against yachts in the region.  It was mostly things like dinghy anchor's stolen or minor things like that, but they also talked about how much the Volcano on the island of Montserrat was erupting at any given time and if it was safe to go down the leeward side of the island.  So we were fascinated...

How it all began...

We had been working for a couple of years in St.Maarten and saving all our $ to go sailing again, we had a new boat we had bought very cheap at a boatyard auction but was in quite a state, so we had worked very hard to do her up.   Our baby was now 2 and the perfect age for sailing. While we were sailing I was creating beaded jewelry in the colors of the Caribbean Sea, which I already had an obsession about.  I used crystals, glass beads and LARIMAR which is the gem stone of the Caribbean, only found in Dominican Republic.   I had all the beads stored underneath the big navigation table, so I would...

Tobago memories found at WWIN Show, Las Vegas....

The cricket was on the radio in the customs office of Tobago when we arrived to clear in at our first Caribbean island.  It was an ice breaker between us exhausted ocean-crossing sailors and the Tobagoan customs officers, as the West Indies cricket team were playing the Australian cricket team... luckily they were winning, so they were happy.  After a total of 55 days at sea, with only 3 stops, we couldn't be happier either.   Scarborough is the capital of Tobago, and it is a crazy busy, chaotic town, FULL of loud reggae music and bright colors.  An enormous contrast to our quiet life of survival at sea.  We stayed long enough to fill up the boat with fresh water...

How to pack for the islands when it's snowing outside

Right now it is SUMMER here in Australia.  Its "stinkin hot" (as we Aussies say) and the humidity is sky high.  Even the kangaroo's are heading out to the beach for a swim according to @auquaswimwear  I am heading out to Las Vegas soon for a trade show and I know its going to be cold.  It got me thinking that most of my island friends (you guys) are in the cold right now, and a large majority of you may be planning a tropical island vacation VERY SOON.  Here is a screen shot from The Weather Channel showing more snow than I have ever seen in my life! I don't know about you guys, but I find it hard to pack for...
